Doniños Beach

Doniños Beach

Doniños Beach is in San Román, Ferrol (50km from La Coruña). There’s great surfing here, and its extraordinary beauty is well-known among surfers and travellers worldwide.
Awarded a Blue Flag for many years running, this Spanish beach is made of fine, golden sand and is approximately 1,700 metres long and 50 metres wide. Several surf championships take place at this beach every year. It has very strong currents, and there are often many professionals and local surfers here, so we don’t recommend it for surf beginners. However, it’s excellent if you want to watch and learn from them.
Historians tell us that in 1800, an English admiral by the name of Admiral Warren tried to conquer Ferrol, together with his fleet of a hundred ships and infantry. Finally, owing to the state of the sea and the beach’s strong defences, the conquest was unsuccessful.
Highlights: Ferrol is one of the two starting points of El Camino de Santiago, sometimes called St. James’s Way in English, mostly used by pilgrims coming from Britain, Ireland, and Northern Europe. It’s also the host to annual international surf championships.
